What is Chai Tea?

Chai (like the “chi” in “chime”) means nothing other than “tea”. In its original sense, masala chai – literally, “spiced tea” – refers to the sweet Indian beverage drunk hot and composed of a mixture of black tea, milk and different spices. The oriental spices typically found in this spiced tea are cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, pepper corns and cloves. They blend to create such a distinctive aroma that one could imagine they can taste the entire Orient. However, different combinations can be created by adding other spices, such as nutmeg, liquorice or chocolate.

For you, our expert tea tasters have taken the classic chai, based on a black tea blend, and plumbed the depths of this tasty, exotic spiced tea to discover its entire diversity. Try them all and you’re sure to find yourself tempted by a few of them.

Of course the modern world has elevated chai to new planes of experience–chai ices, milkshakes, chocolate chai, non-fat, low-cal sweeteners, decaf, and so on.
